Outreach Program – Beach Cleaning by Std X

Venue: Suruchi Beach, Vasai.

Main goal of outreach program:

1. To develop deeper relationships between students and the communities they live in, which will help to shape the local area and nurture goodwill.
2. To give an enhanced educational experience to students.

Summary:

As a part of the outreach program, a beach clean-up activity was conducted by St. Francis Xavier’s High School, Naigaon (W), at Suruchi beach, Vasai, on 7th August, 2023. A team of 43 students along with three teachers and Nazareth Sir participated in the cleanup drive. Team was equipped with all the necessary cleaning tools like gloves and sacks. Face masks were worn throughout the cleaning activity. Litter was collected within an area of 1000m² after two hours of vigorous cleaning. Items from different categories like plastic, cloth, paper, rubber, glass, traditional waste, etc. were collected. The main source of beach litter is originating from tourism.

Awareness campaign:

After beach clean-up, the students interacted with the public to spread awareness on the ill effects of beach littering and its harmful impact on the environment. A rally was conducted by exhibiting placards with different messages related to clean environment.

Recommendations:

1. Installation of a dustbin on the beach for the usage of beachgoers.
2. Placing awareness boards such as DON’T LITTER at the beach.
3. Regular monitoring and enforcing strict rules for littering on the beaches.
